I did the same to the base then let the pieces sit overnight. I then used a scraping tool to scrape off the Citristrip and old varnish.
After I scraped off the Citristrip and as much varnish as I could, I used my hand sander and sanded, sanded and then sanded some more. I finished it with a wood bleach and Pickling Oak Stain.
Pretty furniture doesn't have to cost a fortune. You just need to look past the imperfections and see the beauty in an unwanted piece. It's amazing what a little elbow grease and paint can achieve.
