Creating A “Hygge” Home

Hello sweet friends! And welcome to the weekend! Boo-yah! Today let’s talk about what it takes to create a cozy home. What comes to mind when you think cozy? I’ll wait…..

For me, it’s curling up on the couch under a warm blanket with a good book and a cup of coffee. But how do you create that same vibe in your home? Have you heard of “Hygge” – pronounced hyoo-guh? It’s a Danish word that translates to “coziness” or “comfort.” Kind of like the feeling or vibe you would get from snuggling inside on a cold day. And friends, achieving this look within your home is actually pretty easy. It’s all about textures and layers, warm tones and soft colors. Creating an ambience that you see and feel upon entering a room.

In this space, I used blankets and throw pillows to add warmth and texture to the sofa. I used items with varying heights on the coffee table and books layered on the wall and old window panes. The contrasting colors in the rug add warmth to the room. While the glow of the candle and hints of greenery make the room feel cozy and welcoming. When designing any space in my home, I find creating a design board is helpful. Getting started is easy and you’ll find that once you get going on it, the creative juices just start flowing. And they’re fun to play around with. I like to use Canva but there are several apps out there that are easy to use. This particular board was created using Canva.

I designed this board as inspiration for a space I want to put in my basement. Our basement is a work in progress but by having this design board it helps keep me motivated to get it done. Keeping with a similar color scheme and design element is important to keep the room flowing. You don’t want to overpower the feel of the room with bright, bold colors that don’t mix with the style you’re trying to achieve. Don’t get me wrong…there is nothing wrong with color if that’s the theme in the room. Just be sure the colors are cohesive and flow easily within the room. If you have a lot of soft whites and earthy tones adding a bright red coffee table or a neon green accent pillow is going to look out of place. If you want that added color, use a vintage, toned down brick red or a sage green. Those colors are both earthy and will still flow nicely within the room. As you can see in my design board I stayed with a very neutral color palette while still keeping all of the elements that create the Hygge vibe.

I get compliments all the time about how warm and welcoming my home is. And that is exactly what I try to achieve when decorating my home. I want everyone who enters our home to feel welcome from the minute they step inside. My brother once told me that he wanted his own home to be just like mine because it felt so warm and cozy. He passed away 3 years ago and to this day I remember him sitting on my living room floor with his little boy in front of our Christmas Tree and telling me that. I baby sat his kids while he and his wife worked and he would pick them up everyday. His kids have always loved being at my house and now they even have their own cozy bedroom for when they come to stay.

It doesn’t matter which space in your home you are styling. If you want it to feel cozy and warm, just remember Hygge. Cozy elements that make you feel warm and that will make your guests feel welcome. Afterall, home is the best place to be. One of my favorite quotes is from Jane Austen. And I have it proudly displayed in my home.
